Dear Artist,

You may by now have received contact from a UK advertising agency called ‘Entire’. They are developing an advertising campaign on behalf of Tourism Ireland called ‘The Art of Enjoyment’. Central to that campaign is the work of Irish visual artists who are asked to contribute the imagery on a competition basis, for exposure in the UK in print media, on TV and the web, etc.

The terms and conditions state that no provision for the payment of artists is in place and we feel in the IGI that, considering:

Irish tourism is a multi-billion euro industry,

‘Entire’ will most likely have negotiated a lucrative contract with Tourism Ireland

That the directors and staff, of Tourism Ireland themselves receive salaries and printers,

lawyers, photographers, writers and editors working on the project will be paid.

Artists, whose work is planned to be CENTRAL to the campaign effort, should be free to negotiate payment for their work. Or at the very least, receive a fair remuneration for use of their work, as in every other advertising campaign.

This campaign shows a distinct lack of esteem for artists. Most artists have given freely of their money or work to raise funds for a multitude of charities. However, Tourism Ireland is not a charity case. We feel that it would be inadvisable to supply your valuable art to this campaign for no return other than a vague promise of heightened profile. If you do intend to supply your work, please find below, a copy of a price for a non-exclusive image with usage parameters outlined similar to those requested as an example of how usage rights are calculated. This price is taken from an established stock imagery web site that includes a price calculator for reproduction rights. If you’re asked to submit, you can offer your work with a fair price attached. If you have already submitted your work, it’s not too late to either submit a price for reproduction rights or withdraw from Tourism Ireland the opportunity of using your work for free.

The IGI has written to the director of Tourism Ireland and copied the letter to the Minister of the Arts, Culture and Tourism. You can find out more about the industry standard method of pricing intellectual property at www.illustratorsireland.com

Yours faithfully,

The IGI committee
