THE HANDSTAND

april 2005

Introducing Joe Ambrose,
author of Serious Time and Too Much to Soon and the extraordinary dissident volume with Frank Rynne of Baby Snakes and Terry Wilson, man from nowhere,( citadels of enlightenment with William Burroughs and Brion Gysin)....this last engendered one of the most memorable Art exhibitions of the 1980s, reminding us of the day when the Opening Celebration created a hilarious and exciting gathering of speeches and mayhem and a sponsor who purchased real alcohols. Ambrose recently published a paperback on Iggy Pop

BIRD FLU

Joe Ambrose

I had to go for Burroughs, Beckett or Beuys.

Given half a choice, I’d go for Joyce.

I’m the man in black until things get brighter.

Bring me the head of a singer-songwriter

Too many people, too many chickens.

Asian flu. The world sickens.

I’m going with a guy with grey hair.

People stop and stare but I don’t really care.

So strange to be a stranger,

So strange to walk alone

So strange to be a stranger

In the place that you call home.

Too many people, too many chickens.

Asian flu. Don’t know what to do.

DOWN IN DUBLIN

Joe Ambrose

I was down in death,

I was down in Dublin,

I was down in the ground,

I was going some place only dead men go,

A bleak black place only dead men know.

I was down in the depths of the deepest sea,

Down where there is no you or me.

I went down down down like Elvis Presley.

I was down and out.

I thought you’d rescue me

RIGHTEOUS GENTILE

Joe Ambrose

Daughter of Asher Benson,

Good morning and I love you.

I’ll be yr righteous Gentile

When we drive Israel into the sea,

Give the Arabs back their country.

Give Long Island to the liberal Jews,

Their promised land by the sea.

And the Tough Jews Florida can have

If they battle it out with the Cubans
