On
the occasion of IMMAs
major exhibition Philippe Parreno: November (4
November 2009 - 24 January 2010) the IFI is
delighted to present two films by Philippe
Parreno, followed by a discussion with
the artist, led by Rachael Thomas, Head of
Exhibitions at IMMA, about these films and the
influence of cinema on his work as an artist.
Zidane, made
in collaboration with fellow artist Douglas
Gordon, creates a real-time portrait of Zinédine
Zidane. Filmed during the course of a match
between Real Madrid and Villareal on April 23,
2005 and using 17 cameras, all trained on the
title character, the film documents literally
every movement Zinédine Zidane makes, resulting
in an unique and immersive portrait of an athlete
in action.

Over the course of the
past 20 years Philippe Parreno has produced a
varied and complex body of work which is full of
references, mental evocations and arguments
relating to variants from literature, philosophy,
science fiction, film, theatre and information
formats such as radio, television and the
internet. What is striking about this approach is
that he does not debate the conventions of the
history of visual art, i.e. painting and
sculpture, but explores the traditional notions
by playing with time, process and formats.
Memories and projections assume a role that
becomes more significant than the object itself.
