A LETTER ON "DOMESTIC SOCIAL CONTROL" SENT TO ISRAEL SHAMIR FORWARDED TO THE HANDSTAND:

Dear Israel,

You write: "The neocons’ desire to secure the realm of Israel is the only remaining rational explanation for the Iraqi war."

Do you discount the "domestic social control" motive entirely?  I refer to the use of Orwellian wars to maintain a war mentality that, more than anything else, enables an otherwise unpopular ruling elite to cast itself as the protector of the people, and to cast their opponents as unpatriotic.

Consider: American rulers enforce greater inequality on their own people than do the rulers of any other developed nation. Were it not for the war mentality--induced by the "War on Terror" and all the previous wars, inlcuding WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, ... Gulf I, Gulf II, Afghanistan, all waged for patently phony reasons, and all using injustice abroad merely as a pretext for war but never actually siding with the oppressed against oppression when waging the war--were it not for these wars the American rulers would be more unpopular and at risk for being overthrown than the rulers of any other developed nation.

Don't you think this gives America's rulers a strong motive for waging Orwellian wars of social control--wars that need no other purpose, even if they have secondary consequences that make them attractive to various sub-sets of the ruling upper class (like the weapons industries)?

Domestic social control is even a good explanation for WHY the American ruling elite is pro-Israel. It has nothing to do with Jews forcing non-Jewish American upper class members to go against their best interests. There is a much more plausible explanation: America's ruling upper class loves Israel precisely because Israel foments the Middle East conflict with its ethnic cleansing; Israel forces the victims of its ethnic cleansing to take up arms against it, and this conflict is etremely important for maintaining elite control of the American public because it enables the corporate-owned mass media to portray anti-Zionist violence as "anti-Semitic, hate-filled, irrational, terrorism" that wants to "destroy Israel--the only democracy in the Middle East" and destroy America too, because "they hate our freedoms."

Where would the "War on Terror" be without the Palestinian/Hamas/Hezbollah/Osama bin Laden boogieman, the credibility of which requires real people with a real grievance against Israel? Imagine how the "War on Terror" would fizzle in the American heartland if peace, based on justice and an end to ethnic cleansing, broke out in Palestine. "The horror...the horror!" is how the entire American ruling class would react. (You don't really think that the American rulers have been sincerely trying for the last 61 years to broker a genuine and lasting peace in the Middle East, do you?)

Don't you think that maybe THIS is why there is not a single member of the American upper class who wants the U.S. to end its support of Israel's ethnic cleansing? (If there were such an individual, they would be using their great wealth to inform the American public why Zionism represents everything Americans believe is wrong--ethnic cleansing, inequality, even, during the WWII, opposition to rescue efforts to save Jews from the Holocaust, which was Zionist policy.) 

The Israel Lobby's Power Comes From the American Ruling Class  [ http://newdemocracyworld.org/War/Lobby.htm ]. If the Israel Lobby didn't exist, the American upper class would have to invent it. They need it to control politicians who might wander off course, and to spew the Zionist propaganda more effectively than anybody else could--as "survivors of the Holocaust" for whom Americans, to their credit, are sympathetic.

Don't you think it is time to stop letting the non-Jewish American ruling elite members off the hook by portraying them as "victims" of the Israel Lobby? They are not victims; they are not dogs being wagged by tails; they are not potential allies against Zionism. They USE Zionism. They are the enemy.
