Background:

The Palestine society in coordination with the Africa Society at SOAS is organising a concert, ‘One Nation Under a Groove.’ As the name suggests, a central theme of the concert is the transgression of religious, cultural, and ethnic divisions. Indeed, the concert will be the first post 7/7 event in London to bring together Palestinian, African, Caribbean British and American artists together aiming at strengthening the social integration and cohesion of UK communities.  Moreover, it is also an event that by its very nature is tapping and building on the growing support for the Palestinian people in UK.

The society's campaigns and activities include, the organisation and promotion of cultural events, such as the annual UK Palestine film festival (http://www.palestinefilm.org/2005/) and exhibitions - as well as talks and seminars which both reflect the existing situation in Palestine and which seek pragmatic solutions to promote a just and lasting peace. We have, over the last few years, organised events that bring together up to a thousand people and we are expecting to attract more to an event such as this. The venue has a capacity of two thousand and we are anticipating that all tickets will be sold.

The proceeds from the event will be split evenly between Enlighten, a Palestinian educational charity in Gaza (www.enlighten-palestine.org) and an African NGO. The aim is to donate funds to those working with children and young people from all walks of life.

The line-up features Pharoahe Monch, legendary lyricist and hip-hop artist, Dead Prez, Florida based political rap duo, Boikott, a young and upcoming producer and DJ living in the West Bank, Arap, a young and gifted rap group whose talent has seen them signed to the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, Invincible, a leading female MC from Detroit, Abiodun Oyewole, from the Last Poets, DAM, the first Palestinian rap crew, and Benjamin Zephaniah and Suheir Hammad, both spoken poets
