SOFT SHOES

Let me asks you Joe.  How much do you know about what you’r saying.   “Almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr.”

Bring the Noise / Bring the Funk for The First Black President

 By Joseph Nyerere

This morning while I was listening to 2Pac and reading the New York Times,  I spot this JoeThePlumber article.
Wow, some real heavy weights, I lift in my head.    It's like 2Pac, “Livin in The House of Pain”, connections
start clicking, switching like an addressing computer.  Click.  Stop: the first Black president comes to mind.

The NYT quotes JoeThePlumber, “...to ask one of these guys a question, and really corner them and get them to answer
a question for once instead of tap dancing around it.  And unfortunately I asked the question, but I still got a tap dance.”

Speaking about Barack Obama, JoeThePlumber added, “He was almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr.”

Sammy Davis Jr. wasof a black vaudeville star who became a world-class actor, singer and dancer.  At the age of four he starred in a short act called "Will Mastin's Gang, featuring Little Sammy."

Hey Joe.  Sammy was deep.  Sammy Davis Junior was deep Joe.  Real deep.  Sh.. so deep, I wonder if you know what the fu.. you talking about.  Did you know that Sammy Davis Jr. was the first Black president of the U. S., became a Jew, and was almost put out of the Black People's Congregation of Fellowship, and was ostracized before he died in 1990.

Did you know that Joe.  Did you?  You better watch cho mouth boy.  Don't even try to understand us Joe.
Sammy was deep.  You better watch cho mouth.  Boy.

We Africans.  We deep.  We ostracized an innertainer and lift-up a person who has not proved himself in the
community and promises us nothing when he is elected.  So dont even go there Joe cause its a Black thang.  au ite.

Lets me work it for you a minute.  You compare Barack Obama and probably other politicians with Sammy Davis, Jr.
having the ability to tap dance.  I dont accuse you cause you look like a good ol'boy. But you could have been slurring
a racial epithets or some’n.  I'ont know you like that, au ite.  So lets forgit that.  We'll take a Black trip.

Sammy George Davis, Jr. tap danced with his father Sammy Davis, Sr. and his uncle Will Mastin before he could walk.
That's just to show you how deep his shit wus.  Dancing fo he could walk.   au ite.   They became the Will Mastin Trio.
There is nothing that little “Sammy” could not do.  On.  off.  Or behind the beat.  Moves.  He had it all.

Sammy was deep, Joe.   Republican just like you Joe.  Household.  Sammy Davis Jr. was a world class dancer, singer, trumpeter, drummer, vibraphonist, comedian, impressionist, civil rights worker, actor, Black Jew, Republican, and he had a konk before Big Red (Malcolm) .  Au ite.  Yeah.  Sammy was deep.

Sammy Davis, Jr. was the first Black president of the United States.  He was declared so by the people.
Yeah.  Sammy Davis, Jr. was the first Black president, elected and lifted high by the people.  Went by the name Rufus.
Yep. That was back in the day.

Sammy Davis Sr. and his uncle, Will Mastin protected Sammy Jr. from racism as much as was possible, just like my
father did me, Joe.  Racism was explained to us as jealousy that why we ont fear "white" folk.  My momma hu show
nuff didn't like "white" people.  She said white people were crazy.  But me, I gits al ong wit everybody. Some of my good
friends be "white".   I even git along with the "black" friends who wanna be "white".

Sammy Davis was a U.S. Army soldier during WWII and saw strong racial prejudice and was a prisoner of race and class
before John McCain was born.

Upon entering the army, Sammy said, "Overnight the world looked different. It wasn't one color anymore. I could see
the protection I'd gotten all my life from my father and Will. I appreciated their loving hope that I'd never need to know
about prejudice and hate, but they were wrong. It was as if I'd walked through a swinging door for eighteen years, a door which they had always secretly held open."

Does that sound anything like Barack Obama, Joe.   Well here's a lil’some'n bout tap dancing.  I'on drop some'n on
you.   so next time you speak to one of dem news papers.  Say "soft shoe"or "hoofing".  Dont say tap-dancing.
It aint got the sound.  Tap dancing sounds lam or girly.  Saying?

Listen to Pac some times and git a hold on a new language or some'n.  On “Livin in The House of Pain”,  2PAC raps
a line about Savion Glovers phone lines being tapped by the government.

I wish I wus a detective cause there some deep shit up in here, Joe.   Savion Glover has a long line that he’s in with his
life form, some call it art.  Savion brings the funk hard - him and his crew.  2Pac knew it and gives him a line and links it
to the wire tapping devils in The House of Pain.

Joe, you unwittingly or with wit named a great innertainer, one of the best seen in America, the first
Black president, Sammy Davis Jr. and compares him to Barack Obama who might be the second.  Some deep shit Joe.

I am not be sure what you knows about soft-shoe or Sammy Davis Jr. – so I’on haf to run some stuff to you.  au ite.

Barack Obama will need to do much work before he can best Sammy Davis at tap dancing, as you call it,
cause – Sammy he done done it.

But you did say that Obama is “almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr.”.  The operative here is “Almost”.

Respect to you Joe, cause you could'ah said Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Ginger Roger or someone
“white”, they were pretty good, but you went black.  I commend you Joe.  Respect.

This is something like them black face jockey statues:  like how caucasion folk used to tie horses, and today make them
prized antiques from the jim crow era that some folk think was a long time ago, but is now.  Jim crow just took a blow
till he can git back down the floor.

Research history of jockeys in America Joe and you’ll find the greatest American jockeys and horsemen were “Black”,
won more Kentucky derbies than anybody, and lay buried at Churchill Downs Jockey Hall of Fame.

Perhaps Obama could ride pass all dem udder political jockeys and be the best president you ever did see.
just like dem black face jockeys did back in the 20s and 30s, but Obama wont be the first black face president.
At least not chosen elected by Black folk.  He do got a few moves cause I saw him on that Ellen woman show and
he was moving but it got no funk in it.  May be he can learn to hoof.  I'on speak to Savion bout it.

Sammy Davis, Jr. was the first black face president of the United States of America, coming home grown from the
people, and celebrated by the people. (foot note)

Hey Joe, I’on give you a few others giants in soft shoes and follow a line befo we gits back to the first black face
president.

I aint gonna talk about 2Pac=2 0cause he's crazy, au ite.   He want us to believe that if we wus to walked in his shoes
we’d be crazy too and only God can judge him.   biggie SMALL thought the same.  Judge that.

2Pac called it the house of pain.  Livin in the House of Pain is graphic, so if you aint got big ears, I advise you to skip it.  In case you decide to listen to House of Pain be sure to check out Only God Can Judge Me so Pac can redeem himself. (foot note)

SOFT SHOE on Some FOLK

So.  Joe.  Let’s git back to tap dancing, unless you wanna soft shoe around the issue.

2Pac/Savion/ Hines brother/Sammy Davis/…

I’on follow that line so we can git some flavor in he re, about now, au ite.  Savion Glover the tap dancer in soft shoes is
still here wit us.

Savion be brin’ging funk and noises, louder than most folk ears, in every forum and format, in every unconceivable
volumn: European classical, African classical, funk, fusion, all hues of blues, noisier than Phili Joe or Poppa Joe Jones'
drums, sounds fatter than the big bad sound of Olatunji, and sweeter than Max Roaches brushes, and so forth.

Savion be brin ging it hard and loud.  You Hear Me?  A little bid of rhythm makes the world go round, Joe.

Some folk still think / The Blues is a song / Blues aint no song / Blue aint nothing / Till you got you some.

The Maurice and Gregory Hines brothers - mentors Savion Glover

President Sammy Davis Jr. -  mentors The Hines brothers

The Hines brothers -  prized students of Henry LeTang

Henry LeTang - Master artist of African tradition of living arts.

Go black Joe and see if you can find a modern Black innertainer, dancer who does not tie to Henry LeTang.
I dare you.  Go black to see some connects to tap dance with Savion, Maurice and Gregory Hines, Ben Vereen
and other who connect to the African roots coming up through Dr. LeTang’s Dominca and St. Croix funky roots.

Tuff as they be.  None of them could touch the first black face president Sammy Davis, Jr.

It was a showdown.  Gregory Hines had tried em’all, he struggled with the first black face president, like Jacob
wrestling the angel.  Sammy Davis, Jr. cut em up like he wus a piece of cake.  Gregory had to say uncle quick.
Sammy was king – the first black face president wearing soft shoes wit a beat in’em.

Tap on this:   Masters say, “the only way you can be a master is be taught by one.
Glove - Hines - Davis - Dr. LeTang:  masters all.

Gregory Hines spoke at Sammy D avis's funeral and said  that  Sammy Davis had made a gesture to him,
"as if passing a basketball … and I caught it."

Master Hines said the The President thought that he could carry on from where he left off.

Dr. Henry LeTang move mountains in his practical instructions:  Davis, Hines, LeTang

The First Black President with soft shoes and other tap dancers:
John Bubble (Bub, a sporting life) / Sammy Davis, Senior / Charles Coles (Honey ) / Will Mastin
Jimmy Slyde (King Slide) /  Fayard Nichols / Harold Nichols / Gregory Hines /  Savion Glover /
Dr. LeTang (teacher)

Gregory Hines died and passed the stick to Savion.   Let me asks you Joe.  How much do you know about
what you’r saying.   “Almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr.”

You’r brilliant Joe and probably dont know it.  If Barak Obama can tap in his art of politio-economics as well as
those giants have done in their art, then he’ll make a great second black president.   Mr. Samuel George Davis, Jr.
was his real name.  Folk who knew  him called him Sammy.  But every one called him by his name Sammy Davis
Junior.  What an honor to be called by your name. (by the way, I heard that Mr. Obama doesn’t want to be called
by his name.)  It took a long time before Africans be called our names.

Perhaps, he’ll learn to tap as well as the first Black president, Sammy Davis Jr. and then we will have arrived.
